There are several different types of injectable fillers available today, and each one is unique in terms of longevity. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, fillers are among the most popular because their formulas are soft, natural-looking, and can be dissolved if something goes awry. These fillers are temporary and offer results for roughly a year.
It’s important to realize that the exact lifespan of facial fillers is not guaranteed. Your mileage may vary based on several different factors. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hayley Brown explains more below.
Type of Filler
Not all dermal fillers are created equal. Even within the umbrella of hyaluronic acid-based products, variations in each formula will affect longevity.Â
For example, JuvĂ©derm® Vollureâ„¢ and Juvederm® Volumaâ„¢ XC can last up to two years after a single treatment. These products use a special cross-linking technology that slows the rate of absorption for beautiful results that take more time to fade.
Filler Placement
When it comes to longevity, the placement of your dermal filler also plays a role. Fillers last longer in some regions of the face than they do in others.
As a rule of thumb, your filler is going to hold up better when it’s injected into areas that don’t have a lot of movement, such as the chin and cheekbones. On the other hand, it will dissipate faster in areas that do have a lot of movement, like the lips and forehead.
Your Metabolism
Everyone has a different metabolism. Yours will affect the speed at which your body breaks down and resorbs your favorite injectables.
If you have a fast metabolism, you may notice that you have to schedule your touch-up treatments more often than other patients to enjoy consistent results. A fast metabolism is a blessing when it comes to burning calories, but not so much when it comes to getting the most out of fillers. Fortunately, if you receive a few rounds of injections, you will likely notice that your results last longer each time.
Set Reasonable Expectations During a Consultation
