Does BMI Play a Role in Liposuction Safety?

According to a new study, the answer is yes. Recently, researchers at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, the University of Illinois’ Division of Plastic Surgery, and the Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Health Network conducted a study to look at the risk of different levels of liposuction volume compared with varying levels of body mass index (BMI) in patients.

The study found that higher volume liposuction procedures may be safer for higher BMI patients. Dr. John Y. S. Kim, one of the co-authors of the study, stated, “BMI plays a role in outcomes of liposuction volumes, and higher-BMI patients may be able to tolerate more liposuction than lower-BMI patients.”

He went on to say that one of the most important points emphasized by the study is that “liposuction in the hands of properly trained surgeons is an exceedingly safe procedure with low morbidity.”

Choosing a highly skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon is always important for achieving the results you want and ensuring that your procedure is as safe as possible.
