Breast Cancer Awareness - Las Vegas breast surgeonA recent study published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians has delivered some promising news during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to this study, breast cancer mortality rates dropped nearly 40% between 1989 and 2015. As a result, 322,600 breast cancer deaths were averted during this time period.

This trend came after breast cancer death rates steadily increased .4% each year from 1975 to 1989. The study attributes this decline in breast cancer deaths to improved treatment options and earlier detection from regular mammograms.

Some of the advances in breast cancer treatments over the last 25 years include:

  • Better chemotherapy regimens administered after surgery to reduce the likelihood of the cancer returning
  • An anti-estrogen agent called tamoxifen
  • A drug called Herceptin which is used to treat tumors with an above average level of a protein called HER2
  • A class of drugs called aromatise inhibitors

While this drastic decline in mortality rates is an extremely positive sign, breast cancer remains a significant problem. It’s the most common cancer diagnosed in American women and the second leading cause of cancer death. Approximately 250,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2017, and more than 40,000 women are likely to die from breast cancer this year.

For many women battling breast cancer, breast reconstruction is an important part of the recovery process. It can help restore a sense of wholeness and femininity after a traumatic life event. Dr. Hayley Brown understands the devastation caused by breast cancer, and she can advise you as to right breast surgery plan to help restore your breasts following a mastectomy.
