UV Safety Month Skin Care Tips

The long, warm days of summer are in full swing and there’s no better time for UV Safety Month to remind us that skin care should be part of our daily routines, not just something we think about at the beach or before a big event.

A recent survey conducted by RealSelf uncovered a shocking statistic that 70 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 34 do not wear sunscreen regularly, and 78 percent of the same age group admitted that they either never wear sunscreen or only think to apply it when they are at the beach.

Before you step outside next time without sun protection, remember that 90% of skin aging is caused by sun exposure. Although the damage done today may not be evident for several years, exposing your naked skin to the sun can increase the development of wrinkles, sun spots, and dry skin.

The #1 way to keep your skin healthy according to dermatologists is to use sunscreen daily. To protect your skin, and keep yourself looking youthful and healthy, remember these tips:

  • Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.
  • Give your skin time to absorb sunscreen by applying it 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Keep your skin protected by reapplying sunscreen every two hours.
  • Seek shady areas and wear hats, cover ups and sunglasses to protect your skin from sun damage.
