Treatments for Cellulite Part II

Endermologie is approved by the U.S. FDA for the temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. While a temporary decrease in the appearance of cellulite may occur, the technique appears to redistribute fat rather than permanently alter its configuration under the skin. In the scientific literature, endermologie offers no proven long-term benefit. Treatments are expensive and typically last for 30-45 minutes, and 10-12 treatments are typically required before results are noticeable. Results are subtle if at all. Most patients end up being disappointed and unsatisfied with the result.

Laser or light therapy: The FDA has approved two laser/light-therapy devices that combine suction or massage with light therapy for the temporary reduction of the appearance of cellulite. These are TriActive and VelaSmooth. Multiple treatment sessions are required along with maintenance treatments over years to keep up the improved appearance. These treatments are painful and costly and have no proven benefit on the appearance of cellulite long-term.

Dietary supplements. Many herbal and diet supplements as well as diuretics claim to improve the appearance of cellulite. There are no valid clinical studies to support the use of these dietary supplements for the treatment of cellulite.

Cellulite is a common aesthetic concern for most people. Unfortunately, right now, there is not a highly effective and affordable treatment with proven long-term improvements. I am confident that as technology improves, one day there will be a reliable way to treat cellulite and tighten skin. When that day comes, I will be first in line to try it out. For now, the best option is exercise, and, if needed, weight loss. Experts agree that the most effective exercise routine for cellulite is one that incorporates aerobic exercise and strength training along with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber. As your muscles become more defined and your fatty layer thickness thins, your cellulite may look better. When your efforts fall short, consider plastic surgery. Tummy tucks, breast lifts, buttock lifts, thigh lifts and arm lifts reliably smooth and tighten skin, while improving body contour.
