Tips for Your Tummy Tuck Recovery

The tummy tuck is one of today’s most popular cosmetic procedures. Patients seeking a tighter, firmer, more youthful abdomen choose the tummy tuck for its ability to tighten loose skin and reduce that protruding belly. And, with a little preparation, recovery can be relatively straightforward.

Tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a procedure in which an experienced cosmetic surgeon removes excess skin and tissue in the abdomen to tighten and tone the area. Because it’s major surgery, it carries the normal risks and recovery associated with all operations. But a little planning can help your recovery go more smoothly. Here are a few tips.

●Have a trusted friend or family member drive you home the day of the surgery, and plan to have someone stay with you for up to a week following your operation. You’ll need help with basic tasks for a few days.

●Have a recliner ready to sleep in your first week to keep pressure off of the healing area. If you don’t own one, we can arrange to lend one to you. We’ll even drop it off and pick it back up.

●Expect to use pain medications and muscle relaxers to help you feel more comfortable, and the discomfort usually improves quickly.

●Walk around your house the day after surgery. It is important to get your blood flowing and not stay bedridden .

●You can probably resume most of your normal fitness activities after about six weeks, but your doctor will need to clear you first.

With a little advance planning, your tummy tuck recovery can go smoothly. Just remember that taking care of yourself is priority number one in the weeks following surgery.
