What to Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery

Woman wearing compression bra while healing from breast reduction surgery Recovery is one of the most common concerns women have when they start thinking about breast reduction. How long will it take? Will it be painful? When will you feel like yourself again? At Desert Hills Plastic Surgery, Dr. Hayley Brown helps women in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, through each stage of the recovery process.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon with decades of experience and surgical privileges at St. Rose Dominican Siena Hospital, Dr. Brown has the knowledge and attention to detail to set the stage for a safe healing experience.

The First Week After Surgery

Right after surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and general soreness. These are all normal parts of the healing process. You’ll go home the same day with bandages or surgical dressings in place, and a supportive surgical bra to reduce swelling and support your chest.

Most patients need help around the house for the first couple of days, especially with lifting or reaching. You’ll most likely get prescription pain medication to manage the discomfort, and it’s important to rest while still moving around gently to prevent complications like blood clots.

You may have surgical drains for a few days, depending on the technique used. This varies by case, and Dr. Brown will explain what to expect based on your procedure.

Weeks Two to Six: Gradual Progress

By the second or third week, much of the swelling should begin to go down. You may still feel sore or experience mild numbness around the incisions. These sensations are part of normal healing. Most women can return to non-strenuous work or light activities within 10 to 14 days.

You’ll continue wearing your support bra and will receive instructions for incision care. Avoid lifting heavy objects, running, or upper-body workouts until Dr. Brown clears you. Many patients are back to their full routines, including light exercise, by week six, though recovery timelines vary.

It’s also during this phase that you’ll begin to see early changes in your breast shape and size. The final results may take six to 12 months to fully settle as swelling resolves.
