Dr. Hayley Brown, a board-certified plastic surgeon, works closely with her husband, board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Steve Brown. Together, they’ve been guiding patients through surgery and recovery since 1996. If you’re getting ready for this procedure, here’s what you should know to help you get through the healing process.
Keep It Simple for the First Few Days
You’ll likely head home the same day as your surgery, but you’ll need a trusted adult to help you get settled, prepare meals, and take care of small tasks. Most women feel sore and tired, especially if their procedures included a tummy tuck or breast surgery. Your prescribed pain medication should keep that discomfort in check.
Dr. Brown’s team will send you home with step-by-step instructions for aftercare. You’ll know how to clean your incisions, when to change your dressings, and what warning signs to keep an eye on. We encourage some light walking starting on day one to keep your blood flowing and lower the risk of complications like blood clots. You may also be asked to wear compression garments, depending on your surgical plan.
One Week In
During the first week, you can expect to feel gradual improvement. Swelling and tightness are still normal, but bruising should begin to fade. Avoid lifting anything heavier than a purse, and do not push yourself. Giving your body time to heal.
We’ll schedule follow-up visits with you to see how you’re healing and answer any questions. Around the two-week mark, most patients can start light activities. If your job is mostly desk work, you may be ready to return at this point.
Healing Over Time
Recovery doesn’t stop once you’re up and moving. The first six to eight weeks are key for healing, but it can take three to six months to see your full results. Swelling continues to go down gradually, and the incisions will fade over time.Â
You’ll likely feel more like yourself each week, especially if you’re eating well, staying hydrated, and avoiding smoking. Maintaining a steady routine and staying in touch with your surgical team will also help support your long-term healing.
