What Is the Best Age to Get Breast Implants?

The best age to get breast implants depends entirely on your unique circumstances. Women of all ages get breast implants for different reasons. You should wait to have breast implants until after your breasts have stopped developing, but other than that there is no real “best” age to get them.

If you are interested in breast augmentation, no matter your age, contact Dr. Hayley Brown at Desert Hills Plastic Surgery by calling 702-260-7707. We’ll be happy to answer your questions and get you set up with an in-person consultation.

Minimum Age for Breast Implants

Teenagers can have breast augmentation done, but it’s important to know that your breasts should be finished developing before undergoing surgery. For most women, the breasts are fully developed by age 18, although some will finish earlier and some later.

Even if your breasts appear to be fully developed by 16, we recommend waiting until at least 18 before having breast augmentation surgery. The FDA-recommended minimum age for breast implants is:

  • 18 years old for saline implants
  • 22 years old for silicone implants

You should take the time to really think about why you want breast implants, and what you hope to get out of the surgery. You should be having breast augmentation for yourself, not because anyone else suggested it to you.

Breast Augmentation Age Considerations

When thinking about breast augmentation, women at different ages often have different goals. Younger women in their 20s tend to want to enhance naturally small breasts, while older women want to restore volume lost after childbirth and breastfeeding.

If you’re young and are planning to have children in the future, it may be worth it to wait. Reasons for waiting until after you’re finished building your family include:

  • In rare cases, breast implants may interfere with your ability to breastfeed
  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can result in sagging and deflation
  • If you want a mommy makeover, it’s better to be finished having children so you don’t need revision surgery later

However, many women choose to undergo breast augmentation at a younger age anyway. Nowadays, it’s very rare to be unable to breastfeed after breast augmentation if your implant was placed under the muscle with inframammary incisions. Be sure to tell your plastic surgeon you’re planning to have children in the future so that they can plan your surgery accordingly.

Reasons to have breast augmentation at a younger age can include:

  • Significantly small, asymmetric, or deformed breasts that cause self-esteem or self-confidence issues
  • Your plans to have children are far in the future, so you’ll get a lot of satisfaction out of your breast augmentation before potentially needing to replace your implants

Ultimately, what age you want to have breast implants placed depends entirely on you. Dr. Brown performs breast augmentation on patients of all ages, and the satisfaction level is the same whether the patient is 23 or 43.
