The cooler, dryer air of winter has settled in just in time for the holidays. And although that crisp chill makes you want to reach for cocoa and comfy sweaters, it also means your skin probably feels dry and flaky just in time for all of your work and family holiday gatherings.
At Desert Hills Plastic Surgery Center, we’ve got some skin care tips to help you beat the winter dry skin blues in time for the holidays.
- For flaky skin – Don’t over-exfoliate. Be kind to your skin in the winter. Exfoliating too often or too harshly can disrupt your skin’s protective moisture barrier. Try hydrating your skin. Use creamy, non-foaming cleansers, and moisturize directly after your shower to lock in moisture. Also, keep those showers lukewarm. Lingering in hot water is a sure way to dry out your skin!
- For chapped lips – Everyone wants kissable lips for New Year’s Eve! If your lips are too dry and flaky, try a gentle exfoliation with a sugar scrub or soft washcloth and apply a thick, soothing lip balm before bed. Also, don’t overuse flavored lip balms during the day. Flavored balms tend to encourage the urge to lick your lips, which can dry them out even more.
- For breakouts – Acne can worsen in winter because overly dry skin can get inflamed. Most acne treatments have a drying effect and when added to the dry winter air, it’s a combination for breaking out. Try lower strength acne treatments, and moisturize with hydrating face creams.
