Eyelid Surgery

Medical Term: Blepharoplasty

Who is a Candidate?

• A person with excessive wrinkling in the skin of the upper and lower eyelids
• Someone with puffy bags under the eyes making him or her look tired
• A person with a compromised visual field

Goal of Surgery:

• A more youthful and rested appearance
• Improved vision if excess upper eyelid skin was interfering with sight

Procedure Description:

• The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with light sedation
• Incisions are made in the upper and lower eyelids following the natural contour lines and creases. In some cases the incisions are hidden on the inside of the eyelid
• Excess fat and skin are removed, and the incision is closed with very fine suture

Postoperative Course:

• Mild discomfort is relieved with oral pain medication. Ice compresses can be used for comfort
• Sutures are removed within 5 days, you may wear makeup afterwards
• Bruising and swelling last about a week to 10 days
• Most patients return to work within 7 day

Other Options:

• Additional procedures that would enhance the result are forehead lift, face lift and laser skin resurfacing
