Medical Term: Otoplasty
Who is a Candidate?
- Abnormal looking ears from trauma or genetics
- A torn earlobe from earrings
- Ears that are prominent and protrude
Goal of Surgery:
- To correct the disfigurement
- Improve your self-esteem
Procedure Description:
- The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia
- A small incision is made behind the ear and the underlying cartilage is repaired or modified
Postoperative Course:
- A compressive dressing is applied to the ears for several days, which is then replaced with an elastic headband to be worn at night for a few more weeks
- Mild discomfort is relieved with oral pain medication
- Most patients return to work after several days
